Chief Information Officer
Mr Mike Mitchelmore, B Soc Sc (HRD), Grad Dip Telecom Sys Mgmt, Grad Dip Mgmt Stud
Mike took up the position of Australian Research Council (ARC) Chief Information Officer on 01 July 2009.
Before joining the ARC, Mike was the Acting Head of ICT Planning and Development for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), where he was responsible for the whole spectrum of development and delivery of ICT services in support of corporate and business applications, ICT infrastructure, and the departments ICT strategic directions.
While at DFAT, Mike was a leader in the development of the departments ICT Strategic plan and ICT Governance arrangements. He was responsible for the development of major applications to support the departments Consular and Corporate services, and upgrade of the department's ICT systems and voice services to a single global environment. Mike also held several appointments as a representative of DFAT on the CIO Committee, the Shared Communications Services Governance Committee (Fedlink and ICON), and the Secure Network Owners Committee.
His appointments in DFAT included Director of Networks and Technical Support (1997-1998), Senior Manager ICT Operations (1998-1999), Director of ICT Program Management (2000), Regional Support Manager Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Indian Ocean Region based in London (2001-2004), Director Program and Process Management (2004-2005), Director Systems and Network Development (2005-2007), Director ICT Strategy (2007-2008), Acting Head ICT Planning and Development Branch (2008-2009).
Mike has extensive experience in the management of applications development in both Lotus Notes and Microsoft .Net environments, management of ICT infrastructure, operations of local and wide area networks, and digital and IP based voice systems. He is also experienced in the implementation and operation of PRINCE 2/PMBOK (project management) and ITIL (IT Service management) methodologies.
Prior to Mike's service with DFAT (1997-2009), he was a uniform member of the Australian Defence Force (Army 1975-1997) and is a graduate of the Australian Officer Cadet School (Portsea), the Army Command and Staff College (Queenscliff) and the Royal Military College of Science (UK). The highlights of his military career included the award of a City of London Institute Guild Award (CGIA) for his research in Military Technology while at RMC of S, and Command of the 104th Signals Squadron; which was responsible for provision of communications services to the Army's 1st Brigade.
