Fellowships and Awards

The ARC funds research fellowships and awards under the Discovery and Linkage programs within the National Competitive Grants Program.

Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA)

The DECRA scheme is a separate element of the Discovery Program. The scheme was introduced to create more opportunities for early-career researchers in both teaching and research, and research-only positions.

Researchers may be eligible to apply if they have been awarded a PhD within five years or, together with a period of significant career interruption, have been awarded a PhD within nine years of the closing time of submission of Proposals. Please refer to the relevant Funding Rules for this scheme for eligible periods and types of career interruptions.

For more information, please see the DECRA page and associated documentation:

Discovery Indigenous Award

Discovery Indigenous Awards (DIAs) were introduced into the Discovery Indigenous scheme in 2012 to provide opportunities for Australian Indigenous Researchers to receive a salary to further enhance quality Projects.

DIA candidates must demonstrate how the Project quality would be enhanced by a DIA and detail the ways in which the additional research time would be utilised (for example, undertaking sustained Field Research, archival research or laboratory work).

For more information on DIAs, please see the Discovery Indigenous page and associated documentation:

Australian Laureate Fellowships

The Australian Laureate Fellowships scheme reflects the Commonwealth's commitment to support excellence in research by attracting world-class researchers and research leaders to key positions in Australia.

It is expected that, through the Australian Laureate Fellowships scheme, Australian and international researchers and research leaders will make a significant contribution to the generation of knowledge and the Australian innovation system. They will also assist with the development of stronger links between researchers, industry and the international research community.

Future Fellowships

ARC Future Fellowships provide opportunities for outstanding mid-career researchers working in areas of national priority and will significantly boost Australia’s research and innovation capacity.  ARC Future Fellowships encourage research in Australia by the best and brightest Australian and international researchers who can demonstrate a capacity to build collaboration across industry and/or research institutions and/or with other disciplines.  ARC Future Fellowships are available to researchers with 5 to 15 years research experience since the award of their PhD or equivalent research qualification.
