I, as the Accountable Authority of the Australian Research Council (ARC), present the Australian Research Council Corporate Plan 2016–17 to 2019–20, which covers the periods of 2016–17 to 2019–20, as required under paragraph 35(1)(b) of the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013 (PGPA Act).

In addition to the ARC’s ongoing activities associated with administering the National Competitive Grants Programme (NCGP) and Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA), 2016–17 promises to be an exciting year with implementation of two new measures for the ARC announced as part of the Australian Government’s National Innovation and Science Agenda.

Since the announcement of the agenda in December 2015 we have been working on developing an engagement and impact assessment framework that will assess the engagement of university researchers with end-users, and show how universities are translating their research into economic, social, environmental and other impacts.

We are also implementing and monitoring a continuous application process under the Linkage Projects scheme, aimed at facilitating the development of partnerships between industry and university researchers.

The corporate plan is a key governance document for the ARC. In this second year of preparing the plan under the requirements of the PGPA Act we have taken the opportunity to review again how best to present our plans for the next four years. The ARC will continue to work on its performance measurement framework, including considering ways of broadening the sources of performance information.
