Professor Hugh Barrett is Associate Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Western Australia. He is also Professor in Systems Biology within the School of Biomedical Sciences.

Professor Barrett’s research focus is lipid and lipoprotein metabolism as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Professor Barrett has published more than 200 research papers in specialist lipid and general endocrinology journals, including Journal of Lipid Research, Circulation, Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Diabetes, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. 

Professor Barrett is on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Journal of Lipid Research and Atherosclerosis, and has served on National Heart Foundation and NHMRC GRPs (Projects and Fellowship) for more than fifteen years. In 2012, he was Chair of the Medical and Health Sciences ERA Research Evaluation Committee.

Professor Barrett is the past Western Australian representative of the National Association of Research Fellows and Director of Research for the School of Medicine and Pharmacology at the University of Western Australia. In 2002, he was awarded an NHF Career Development Fellowship and more recently was an National Health and Medical Research Council Senior Research Fellow.
