Consultation to develop outlet journal rankings
The initial public consultation to develop outlet journal rankings occurred between 12 June and 14 August 2008.
The ERA PCE and HCA journal lists are now available. The PCE journal list identifies the journals that are indexed by Scopus, and therefore subject to citation analysis under ERA.
The ARC is currently processing the data received for all other disciplines and will finalise the remaining rankings in 2009. Once the journal rankings have been finalised across all disciplines, a single list will be created and used for ERA. The ARC has released an overview of the process to finalise the journal list for the 2010 implementation of ERA.
The ARC will consult about discipline-specific ranked conferences, publishers' lists and other outlets with the relevant disciplines at a later time.
Phase 1 consultation – Ranking journal list development and initial review
In late 2007 the four Learned Academies and a number of discipline peak bodies undertook a journal ranking exercise to develop draft journal rankings for their relevant disciplines. The lists have been reviewed by the ARC, in consultation with the Academies and the other list providers, to remove duplication and inconsistencies.
The ARC has also updated Research Fields, Courses and Disciplines (RFCD) classification codes to the new FoR codes to reflect the recently released Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification (ANZSRC).
The ARC would like to thank everyone involved in developing the draft lists for Phase 1 of the Research Outlet Rankings.
Phase 1 contributors were:
- Academy for Technological Sciences and Engineering
- Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia
- Asian Studies Association of Australia
- AusStage
- Australia New Zealand Society of Criminology (ANZSOC).

Phase 2 consultation – Review and feedback from researchers in the sector
In this phase of the consultation the ARC sought feedback on the draft journal rankings. Specific feedback was requested about the appropriateness of the journal’s quality ranking and the FoR code(s) assigned to it.
