The 2009 ERA trial evaluated two clusters: Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences (PCE) and Humanities and Creative Arts (HCA).

The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr, announced the timeframe for the ERA trial on 23 February 2009.
