On 3 October 2013, the ARC was pleased to be visited by Professor Makoto Asashima, Executive Director of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and Ms Sayaka Iwamura and Mr Mitsuyasu Otsuki. The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), is an independent administrative institution, established by way of a national law for the purpose of contributing to the advancement of science in all fields of the natural and social sciences and the humanities.

Japan is an important collaborating partner country for Australian research, and over the past five years Japan has consistently placed within the ten countries that have the highest number of collaborations with Australian researchers on ARC-funded projects.

ARC CEO Professor Byrne and Professor Asashima discussed ARC and JSPS's respective funding models and options for further international collaboration in research.

Further information on JSPS can be found on their website; Japan Society for Promotion of Science.
