Bionic Eye Research - Applications Open

The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr, today opened the $50 million Research in Bionic Science and Technology Initiative for applications.

"The competitive grants initiative will provide up to $50 million for cutting-edge research into the bionic eye," Senator Carr said.

"Australia's development of the bionic ear has already made a dramatic difference to the lives of thousands of people world-wide and has cemented Australia as a world leader in bionics.

"Bionic eye research holds similar promise, with the potential to restore sight to thousands.

"Under the initiative, a leading research team or teams will receive up to $50 million to initiate significant national and international research collaboration to develop a bionic eye.

"The research group(s) will conduct pioneering research, which will have significant collaboration, and will deliver health and economic benefits.

"Also significant benefits will flow from further research into bionics and the mechanical and software systems used to control them."

This research initiative delivers on the Australian Government's promise, as part of its 2020 Summit response, to implement a long-term national health strategy.

The Initiative will be administered by the Australian Research Council and the assessment of funding proposals will involve national and international experts.

Applications for funding are now open, and will close on 29 July 2009. For more information on the initiative and to download the funding rules visit the Research in Bionic Vision Science and Technology page.
