ARC Funded Journal Outputs Hitting World Benchmarks

Australian Research Council (ARC) Chief Executive Officer, Professor Margaret Sheil, today released the findings of a study of the impact of ARC funded university research.

“The ARC supports and enables high-quality research that addresses national priorities, encourages collaboration and strengthens Australia’s innovation system,” Professor Sheil said.

“The report—ARC-supported research: the impact of journal publication output, 2001–2005—shows that the impact of ARC-funded publications was above the world and Australian averages in all but one field of research in each case.

“This shows that the Australian Government’s investment in research, through the ARC, is producing world-class journal publication outputs, putting Australia at the forefront of international benchmarks.

“The importance of ARC-funded research to the Australian research effort is further highlighted by the fact that publications linked to ARC funding accounted for almost 40 per cent of all publications in the physical sciences and more than 30 per cent in the chemical and mathematical sciences.

“In addition, the impact of ARC-funded publications in the social sciences and humanities disciplines was well above world and Australian averages.”

ARC-supported research: the impact of journal publication output, 2001–2005 was prepared for the ARC by the Research Evaluation and Policy Project (REPP) of The Australian National University.

In undertaking their research, REPP assessed the performance of publications attributable to ARC-funded university research in attracting citations in the wider international research literature; compared that performance with the impact of publications emanating from elsewhere within the Australian research system; and benchmarked that performance against world performance.
