Senator Kim Carr

26 October 2009

$66.8 M in research funding for 211 Linkage Projects

The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr today announced funding of $66.8 million for 211 research projects that will provide advanced knowledge to address our national priorities.

“The Rudd Government is committed to supporting strong and productive partnerships between research institutions and industry,” Senator Carr said.

“These partnerships provide Australian researchers with the resources needed to undertake crucial research that will advance our knowledge, wealth, and help ensure our future sustainability and wellbeing.

“On top of the $66.8 million investment, 437 partner organisations—including national and international governments, and private and non-profit organisations—will provide an additional $121.3 million in cash and in-kind contributions.

“I am pleased at the level of collaboration encouraged through this round of the Australian Research Council’s Linkage Projects scheme.

“The partnerships forged will see a significant transfer of knowledge and skill that will lead to ideas and outcomes that support and strengthen our national innovation system.

“Some of the national benefits that will stem from the research undertaken as part of this investment include:

  • a first-of-its-kind technological platform providing the blind and visually impaired with the ability to physically 'feel' the visual information contained within 2D visual art;
  • the development of techniques to address the issue of cane toad invasion—one of Australia’s major threats to biodiversity; and
  • the development and utilisation of renewable energy technologies for a sustainable future and the facilitation of their integration into electricity grids for network support.”

A summary of the Linkage Projects scheme funding outcomes is attached.
