NT awarded over $1.5 M for innovative research
The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr, today announced funding of over $1.5 million for researchers in the Northern Territory (NT) to conduct four research projects that will produce significant national benefits.
“The Rudd Government is committed to supporting innovative and high-quality research that will contribute to a strong national innovation system and increase the quality of life for Australians,” Senator Carr said.
“Four NT research projects have been awarded funding as part of the latest Australian Research Council (ARC) funding round. Funding will commence in 2010 and be administered over five years.
“This $1.5 million investment will see Australian researchers: gain fresh perspectives on an urgent contemporary debate in Indigenous social affairs; develop a critical understanding of the environmental implication of land use change in the savanna; and analyse best practices for the exhibition of Indigenous culture in major museums.
“The calibre of research projects funded as part of this round has been extremely high.
“I strongly congratulate the successful researchers and institutions. Your research efforts will not only help Australia advance its international research standing, but will help ensure its future prosperity.”
For this funding round, applications were submitted for three funding schemes under the National Competitive Grants Program (NCGP)—the Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development, Discovery Projects and Linkage Projects schemes.
“The NCGP nurtures the creative abilities and skills of Australia's most promising researchers,” Senator Carr said.
Applications for NCGP funding are subject to a rigorous, independent peer review process that considers factors such as the researcher’s track record and capacity to undertake the research; the significance and innovation of the proposed research; the approach to be taken; training opportunities to be made available; and national benefit.
