On 4 November 2013, the ARC was delighted to welcome Dr Daisy Selematsela, Executive Director, Knowledge Management, Corporate and Mr Bishen Singh, NRF Group Executive, Finance and Business Systems, of the NRF to our offices.

As an independent government agency, the NRF promotes and supports research in all fields of knowledge. It also conducts research and provides access to national research facilities. The NRF provides services to the research community especially at Higher Education Institutions and Science Councils with a view to promote high-level human capital development. It aims to uphold excellence in all its investments in knowledge, people and infrastructure.

Collaboration with South Africa has been consistently increasing in ARC-funded projects: in 2007 there were 51 instances of collaboration foreshadowed on ARC-funded research projects. In 2014 the ARC is funding 55 new and ongoing research projects that involve collaboration with South Africa, under six different funding schemes.

The ARC and the South African delegation discussed ARC's processes and activities including the Excellence in Research for Australia exercise, which differs from the South African assessment process in ranking institutions by field of research as opposed focusing on the evaluation and ranking of individual researchers, Open Access and grant management systems.
