Clarivate selected as citation provider for ERA 2018

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Australian Research Council (ARC), Professor Sue Thomas, has today announced that the ARC has selected Clarivate Analytics to provide citation information for the 2018 round of Excellence in Research for Australia.

Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) identifies and promotes excellence across the full spectrum of research disciplines in Australia's higher education institutions.

ERA evaluates the quality of research undertaken in Australian universities against national and international benchmarks. Evaluations are conducted by committees of distinguished researchers from around the world.

ERA uses citation information in relevant disciplines, such as the natural sciences, to inform the expert panels that determine the ERA outcomes.

Citation analysis plays an important role in ERA, alongside a broad range of indicators used for evaluation, including peer review. In the humanities and social sciences, factors such as a larger quantity of research outputs that are not journal articles, mean that the peer review process is required to provide a balanced evaluation within these disciplines.

Professor Thomas commented on the ERA process:

“The ARC is pleased to have Clarivate Analytics on board for the 2018 ERA round. The citation data from Clarivate Analytics and a comprehensive data collection submitted by Australian universities will help inform panels of experts to determine the research quality in each unit of evaluation. The ARC continues to consult with the research community about the indicators used and developed for ERA.”

This is the fourth full round of ERA, with previous rounds in 2010, 2012 and 2015.
