New ARC Training Centre to grow Australian horticulture

Australian Research Council (ARC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Professor Aidan Byrne, has welcomed the opening of a new ARC Training Centre dedicated to developing new technologies and products to improve the Australian horticultural industry.

The ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre for Innovative Horticultural Products, officially launched at Government House in Hobart today, is the latest in a suite of Research Centres that have opened in 2015 under the ARC’s Industrial Transformation Research Programme (ITRP).

The Training Centre—based at the University of Tasmania—has been awarded $2.06 million over three years from the ARC to focus on ways to develop fresh fruit and vegetable products with improved shelf life and sensory quality, through innovations in food science and market analysis.

“The Australian food industry, and the fresh produce sector in particular, offers enormous opportunities for growth and diversification through development of innovative new products that are safe, convenient, affordable and healthy,” said Professor Byrne.

“This ARC Training Centre will also train our future generation of researchers by integrating formal course work and industry placements to deliver research professionals who are ‘industry relevant’, understand food product innovation and can deliver products that meet market demand.”

Researchers at the Centre will team with partners such as: Woolworths; Houstons Farm Research and Development; the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation; and Defence Science and Technology Group.
