Panel to advise on selection of next Australian Research Council CEO

A panel of eminent Australians will help identify a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Australian Research Council (ARC).

Outgoing CEO, Professor Aidan Byrne, announced in May that he will be resigning the position at the end of September to take up a new role at The University of Queensland.

The ARC CEO is a Ministerial appointment and the process to appoint a new CEO is being conducted independently of the ARC.

Acting CEO of the ARC, Ms Leanne Harvey, said a national search will be undertaken by an executive recruiting organisation, Heidrick & Struggles, to identify potential candidates. A panel will then conduct interviews, before the Government considers and makes a final decision on the new CEO.

The panel will comprise the following members:

  • Dr Michele Bruniges AM, Secretary of the Department of Education and Training
  • The Hon. John Lloyd PSM, Australian Public Service Commissioner
  • Professor Ian Chubb AC, former Chief Scientist
  • Ms Catherine Livingstone AO, President of the Business Council of Australia
  • Mr Leigh Jasper, Chief Executive Officer, Aconex.

“The appointment of a new CEO to lead the ARC and to continue to build on its achievements is an important decision,” said Ms Harvey.

“The panel members bring strong public sector, research and industry experience, as well as knowledge of venture capital and private equity to the CEO selection process.

“The ARC plays a critical role in delivering policy and programmes that advance Australian research and innovation. The ARC also has an important role to play in industry engagement and to ensure the research it supports translates into real benefits for the Australian community and our economy.

“On behalf of the ARC, I thank Professor Byrne for the leadership, direction and dedication he brought to the ARC, and wish him every success for the future. We now look forward to working with the ARC’s next CEO to ensure Australia continues to be a world leader in high-quality research and innovation.”
