The potential safety risks of self-driving cars—10 November 2017

Dr Gemma Read from the University of the Sunshine Coast has been awarded a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award to investigate the potential safety risks arising from the introduction of advanced autonomous vehicles.

The project to commence in 2018, has secured $361,996 and was announced on 10 November 2017 by Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon. Simon Birmingham.

While automation promises to reduce crashes, the project expects to generate new knowledge about the emergence of risks through interactions between human road users and autonomous vehicles, particularly in the initial transition period.

The project expects to provide significant safety benefits by preventing new types of road crash events.
