Remote sensing to improve structural efficiency of high-speed catamarans

A new $460,000 research project to develop a monitoring system that remotely measures ship motions, loads and ride control activity for commercial high-speed catamarans has been funded by the Australian Government through the ARC Linkage Projects scheme.

The researchers, led by Dr Jason Lavroff at the University of Tasmania, will analyse the data produced by this monitoring system using advanced statistical methods to inform evidence-based design to improve the structural efficiency and passenger comfort. The research has additional cash and in-kind support from industry partners: INCAT Tasmania Pty Ltd and Revolution Design Pty Ltd.

The work is expected to have a significant impact on design rules used worldwide, reducing weight and increasing payload and transport while providing a ‘Smart’ semi-autonomous interface for on-board guidance to the ship captain. This technology will lead the way for increasing ship safety, vessel longevity and improving passenger comfort for all types of vessels worldwide.
