Led by Professor Lynn Meuleners, a team of researchers at Curtin University of Technology—with support through the ARC Linkage Projects scheme—will investigate the effect of mild dementia on a person’s ability to drive a vehicle.

Using a state-of-the-art driving simulator, and vehicles equipped with special monitoring devices, Professor Meuleners and her team will compare the driving patterns of a group of people with mild dementia to a control group. The results will be used to develop a comprehensive assessment tool, and quantify the impact of dementia on various driving tasks.

Supported by $195,645 in Australian Government funding through an ARC Linkage Projects scheme grant, the research team has partnered with clinicians and policy makers from partner organisations that will provide additional cash and in-kind support, including the WA Department of Transport, the Road Safety Commission and Alzheimer’s Australia.
