Professor Enrico Valdinoci

Administering Organisation: The University of Western Australia

Discipline area: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences

Fellowship project summary:

FL190100081: This project enhances Australia as a world leader in the field of mathematical analysis, focusing on regularity and qualitative properties of solutions of partial differential equations and nonlocal problems, and solving very challenging research questions in a key strategic area of international science. The broad applicability of the results constitutes a very fertile ground for cross-disciplinary interactions with scientists of other disciplines. A new research team based in Western Australia will be founded, connecting world leaders and talented early career researchers, providing an ideal training environment for students and PostDocs, offering an excellent image of the scientific community and developing strategic fields of knowledge.

Australian Research Council funding: $3,532,919

About Professor Valdinoci

Enrico Valdinoci is a Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Western Australia.

Professor Valdinoci’s research interests lie in understanding the geometric properties of the solutions of the Allen-Cahn equation and their large-scale behaviour, also in view of the modelisation of long-range phase coexistence models and their relation with spin systems. He discovered a new, and rather surprising, boundary stickiness feature of the nonlocal minimal surfaces which has absolutely no counterpart in the classical case.

For his research achievements, he was named Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher for three consecutive years, 2016, 2017 and 2018, and Google most quoted Mathematician, according to his graduation year, in terms of total number of citations and in the area of analysis. He is also the Chief Editor of Nonlinear Analysis and Mathematics in Engineering.
