2019 Laureate Profile: Professor Yi-Min (Mike) Xie

Professor Yi-Min (Mike) Xie
Administering Organisation: RMIT University
Discipline area: Engineering, Information and Computing Sciences
Fellowship project summary:
FL190100014: This project aims to harness the full potential of digital technologies to significantly enhance the performance and reduce the environmental impact of free-form architecture of the future. The research expects to establish a fundamentally new computational platform capable of producing diverse and competitive designs, and an environmentally friendly manufacturing process for realising such designs. Expected outcomes include an unprecedented cloud-based interactive design tool, and a novel minimum-waste manufacturing technology for fabricating mass-customised building components. This project will transform the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector and make the Australian manufacturing industry more competitive globally.
Australian Research Council funding: $2,871,982
About Professor Xie
Yi-Min (Mike) Xie is a Distinguished Professor and Director of Centre for Innovative Structures and Materials at RMIT University.
Professor Xie’s research areas include structural optimisation techniques, computational mechanics, structural analysis and design, architectural design, and additive manufacturing. He was one of the principal originators and developers of the now widely used evolutionary structural optimisation and bi-directional evolutionary structural optimisation methods. His pioneering work in this field since the early 1990s has laid the foundation for a broad range of applications around the globe in engineering, architecture, biomechanics and materials science.
For his research achievements, Professor Xie was awarded the AGM Michell Medal by Engineering Australia in 2017 and the Clunies Ross Innovation Award from Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) in 2017. He was elected as Fellow of ATSE in 2011 and Fellow of Engineers Australia. Professor Xie was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2019 for his "significant service to civil engineering, and to higher education".
