ARC Industry Fellowships

A suite of Industry Fellowships is being developed by the ARC, following the announcement of the University Research Commercialisation Action Plan, a $2.2 billion investment to place university innovation and industry collaboration front and centre of Australia’s economic recovery.

The schemes will be open to all researcher career stages, and will aim to build researcher capability in commercialisation, industry collaboration and translation. The Schemes are also intended to promote workforce mobility across industry and academic settings and drive research commercialisation outcomes of industry.

The scheme level objectives include:

Early career fellowships

  • support early career researchers to collaborate with industry on high quality research
  • contribute to research that solves industry-identified challenges or opportunities
  • enhance the research collaboration, commercialisation and/or translation skills of early career researchers
  • enable research, research training and industry activities in high quality and supportive higher education and industry environments
  • promote diverse career pathways across university and industry settings
  • contribute to economic growth, including through focusing on Australian Government priorities, such as the National Manufacturing Priorities

Mid-career fellowships

  • support mid-career researchers to collaborate with industry on high quality research
  • drive research to solve industry-identified challenges or opportunities
  • leverage and enhance the research collaboration, commercialisation and/or translation skills of mid-career researchers
  • enable research, research training and industry activities in high quality and supportive higher education and industry environments
  • promote diverse career pathways across university and industry settings
  • Map industry-identified challenges with potential projects that align to the scheme objectives

Industry Laureates

  • support collaboration between university and industry personnel on ground-breaking, internationally-competitive research
  • fund programs of research that deliver broad and significant outcomes across a variety of industry settings
  • attract and retain outstanding researchers and research leaders of international reputation with demonstrated capacity for collaboration, commercialisation and/or translation
  • provide an excellent research training environment and exemplary mentorship to nurture the development of collaboration, commercialisation and translation skills among early career researchers
  • create ambassadors for the forging of research alliances between universities, industry, the international research community and/or other research end-users
  • contribute to economic growth, including through focusing on Australian Government priorities, such as the National Manufacturing Priorities

Work is progressing on developing the key parameters for the schemes, with a series of engagements currently being held with key stakeholders.

Key issues that have already been identified by ARC stakeholders from industry and research settings include:

  • The objectives of each Scheme need to be clear
  • Scheme design should maximise flexibility
  • Fellows should be supported in both industry and academic settings
  • Processes should be streamlined to support industry engagement
  • Schemes should be designed with an awareness of the broader research and innovation ecosystem
  • Administrative burden on applicants and industry should be minimised where possible

The ARC is closely considering this and other feedback in the design of the new schemes.

The Industry Fellowship Schemes will be commencing from July 2022, subject to ministerial consideration.
