In 2014, the Australian Research Council (ARC) will fund a new research initiative which will facilitate scientific collaboration between the University of Tasmania, CSIRO and the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) through the ARC's Special Research Initiativesscheme. Funding is for $24 million over a period of three years.

The Special Research Initiative for Antarctic Gateway Partnership will increase the capacity for collaborative research to be carried out in a variety of projects covering the physical, chemical, atmospheric, cryospheric and biosciences. The Gateway will allow better remote sensing and mapping capabilities, and improve the partnerships which provide observations of land, sea and ice in the Antarctic.
