On 28 March 2012, the Australian Government announced it will provide $69 million to secure the operation of the Australian Synchrotron over the next four years.

The ARC will administer the Special Research Initiative in Synchrotron Science to support researcher access to the Australian Synchrotron. The ARC is committing $25 million with the NHMRC co-contributing a further $5 million.


The Special Research Initiative for Synchrotron Science will be a large-scale cooperative initiative between higher education organisations. It will be led by experienced researchers and support staff, who will manage a programme of access for researchers to the Australian Synchrotron.

The objectives of the Initiative are to:

  1. deliver a national Programme of competitive funding to enable researcher access to the Australian Synchrotron (including health and medical research)
  2. support excellent basic and applied research by individuals and teams
  3. enhance international collaboration in synchrotron science.
