In 2014, the Australian Research Council (ARC) will fund a new research initiative which will support the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine at the James Cook University through the ARC's Special Research Initiatives (SRI) scheme. Funding is for $42 million over a period of four years.

The Special Research Initiative for Tropical Health and Medicine will fund research and training in virology, disease and transmission control as well as the development of new treatments and vaccines for tropical diseases.
