The ARC held a finance workshop in Canberra on 7 August 2019 for Research Office staff to learn more about the ARC post-award functions and processes.

It is the second year that the ARC Post-award team have led this type of workshop—this year especially for the finance staff in research offices.

Over 50 participants attended, representing 31 universities. All ARC Post-award staff participated, including relevant ARC senior executive staff.

Professor Sue Thomas, Chief Executive Officer of the ARC, welcomed all attendees and spoke about the importance of Research Office staff, as stakeholders of the ARC. This event is part of the ARC's ongoing commitment to continue building effective working relationships with Research Office staff around Australia.

The workshop included topics such as the Commonwealth Government Compliance Framework, Variations to Funding Agreements, End of Year Reporting (financial acquittals), Final Reports, Institutional Reviews and Major Investments reporting requirements. The ARC provided presentations and case studies on the day, and answered a wide range of questions from the participants.

There were two guest speakers at the event, Amanda Hampshire from the University of Newcastle, who gave a presentation about their Research Finance System, and Ross McLennan, President Elect, Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS), who spoke about how ARMS supports research management excellence.

Feedback from participants in a post-workshop survey was positive, indicating that the case studies and discussion at the workshop were very useful. In addition, participants found the networking among their research office colleagues and ARC staff very valuable.
