The ARC is working to implement the outcomes of the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) and Engagement and Impact (EI) Review, and is undertaking a number of activities to prepare for the next rounds of ERA and EI.

The ARC is consulting with stakeholders on:

  • ERA rating scale and benchmarking – the ARC has convened an expert working group to provide advice on the ERA benchmarks, world standard definition and rating scale. The ARC will publish membership of the group on the ARC website and we plan to release a consultation draft by the end of this year.
  • ERA 2023 Journal List Consultation – consultation will commence in early 2022. Universities and discipline peak bodies will be invited to provide comments on the draft list. This will be a similar process to previous ERA rounds.
  • Transition to by-line (post-ERA 2023) – the ARC expects to release a discussion paper on its
  • by-line implementation strategy towards the end of this year and will hold workshops with research office staff. Specifications for the collection of research outputs using by-line will be provided in early 2022.
  • EI rating scale and additional impact studies – the ARC will consult with universities on revisions to the EI rating scale and the calculation methodology for the number of impact studies to be submitted per UoA. A consultation paper will be released in November 2021.

The ARC expects to release draft ERA 2023 Submission Guidelines for consultation by November 2021. Draft EI 2024 Submission Guidelines will be released for consultation by April 2022.

The ERA EI Review Final Report and the ERA and EI Action Plan are available on the ARC website
