ARC Future Fellow, Professor Michael Breadmore, who is based at the University of Tasmania, has spent his research career working to simplify and speed up the analysis of chemical and biological samples, with an increasing emphasis on miniaturisation.

ARC Future Fellow, Professor Dayong Jin, is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), and Director of the ARC Research Hub for Integrated Device for End-user Analysis at Low-levels (IDEAL Hub). Awarded over $3.7 million in funding by the ARC in 2016, the IDEAL Hub is the culmination of many years work by Professor Jin to put Australian biophotonics research into a world leading position, with strong industry partners.

As part of its commitment to promoting diversity and equity principles under the schemes of the National Competitive Grants Program (NCGP), the ARC supports part-time opportunities for award and fellowship recipients under the Discovery Early Career Researcher Award, Future Fellowships, and Discovery Indigenous schemes. Under current provisions, conversion to part-time arrangements may be granted for family and/or carer responsibilities or for exceptional research circumstances. Postdoctoral research and higher degree by research awards under the Australian Laureate Fellowships and Industrial Transformation Training Centres schemes may also be converted to part-time arrangements.

The ARC held its annual Centre Directors’ Forum on 26–27 April 2017 in Canberra. This two-day forum brought together around 120 Directors and business managers from ARC Centres of Excellence, Special Research Initiatives (SRI) and Industrial Transformation Research Program (ITRP) Research Hubs and Training Centres. The forum provided a great opportunity for networking with other academics and ARC staff, as well as exchanging ideas and sharing experiences about best practice on a range of topics relating to managing ARC large investments.
