Leader of the House
MEDIA RELEASE

$4.4 million to support Indigenous researchers

Preserving knowledge of Indigenous ceremonial performance, sharing wisdom and experiences of Koori elders, and discovering how Indigenous identity in remote communities is shaped by organised sport are some of the important new research projects to be undertaken by Australia’s Indigenous researchers with new funding announced today.

Minister for Education, the Hon. Christopher Pyne MP, has announced almost $4.4 million for ten new research projects through the Australian Research Council’s (ARC) Discovery Indigenous scheme, which develops and supports the research expertise of Indigenous Australian researchers.

Minister Pyne said the funding scheme was a vital programme allowing Indigenous researchers to excel in their chosen fields of study.

“The researchers involved in the ten projects announced today will make a valuable contribution to the pool of knowledge in Australia and develop the research expertise of Indigenous Australian researchers.”

For example:

  • The Australian Catholic University will use $419 000 to record oral histories and document the wisdom, knowledge, perspectives and experiences of NSW Koori elders, for use in school and community education.
  • Charles Darwin University will lead a $99 537 project to develop appropriate ways to preserve, interpret and disseminate recordings of Indigenous ceremonial performances in the Wagait-Daly region of the Northern Territory.
  • RMIT University will also receive $529 000 to examine Indigenous identity through organised sport in remote communities.

This announcement of ten Discovery Indigenous projects is part of the 2015 ARC Major Grants announcement totalling $354 million for 941 research projects. A table of funding awarded across Australia is attached.
