MEDIA RELEASE
$70 million for 200 early-career researchers
Minister for Education, the Hon. Christopher Pyne MP, has today announced more than $70 million for 200 new research projects to be undertaken by some of Australia’s best early-career researchers.
The funding has been announced as part of the Australian Research Council’s (ARC) Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) scheme.
Minister Pyne said it was vital that our young researchers were offered funding opportunities to progress their careers and build Australia’s long-term innovation base.
“If Australia is to keep up with the rest of the world, we must invest in our young researchers, to provide them with the resources to become internationally competitive.”
Some of the successful projects that will be undertaken by the DECRA awardees for commencement in 2015 include:
- Dr Amy Waller, The University of Newcastle, will look at how options for end-of-life care can be better tailored so patients can participate in decisions and receive care that is consistent with their wishes.
- Associate Professor Vince Geiger, Australian Catholic University, will seek to improve students’ numeracy skills by generating new theoretical and practical insights into effective numeracy education for the school curriculum.
- Assistant Professor Dirk Lorenser, The University of Western Australia, will use optical fibres to develop new types of microscopic, minimally invasive biomedical imaging devices, to provide 3D tissue images to open new research possibilities.
- Dr Keerthan Poologanathan, Queensland University of Technology, will explore ways to improve the cyclone and earthquake resistance of emergency shelters, to develop novel, safer shelter systems at low cost.
- Dr Margaret Shanafield, Flinders University, will investigate how groundwater is replenished and produce easily applicable tools to predict replenishment after storm events and predictions of groundwater availability under future climate conditions.
This announcement of 200 Discovery Early Career Researcher Awards is part of the 2015 ARC Major Grants announcement totalling $354 million for 941 research projects. A table of funding awarded across Australia is attached.
