Collaboration to drive innovation: ARC Linkage Projects

Developing a novel system to improve the speed and safety of search and rescue helicopter missions, discovering new ways to recover and recycle electronic waste, and creating adaptable housing designs to address housing performance and affordability are just some of the exciting new research projects to commence in 2021, with funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC).

Researchers will partner with industry, business and community organisations to drive innovation and deliver outcomes and solutions to benefit all Australians.

Australian Research Council (ARC) Chief Executive Officer, Professor Sue Thomas, welcomed today’s announcement by Minister for Education and Youth Alan Tudge of 67 new research projects totalling $31.7 million through this round of the ARC’s Linkage Projects scheme.

Professor Thomas said collaboration for quality research and development was fundamental to transforming industries, building communities and strengthening the Australian economy.

'The Linkage Projects scheme is about encouraging collaboration between researchers, industries, and communities to find solutions to real, everyday challenges and issues,' Professor Thomas said.

'It's about bringing together the scientists in our research institutions with those who can apply the outcomes of research to create meaningful outcomes that benefit the Australian community.'

'172 partner organisations will be involved in these varied projects, to contribute a total additional investment (cash and in-kind) of $52 million.'

The ARC’s Linkage Projects scheme supports collaborative research projects between higher education researchers and partner organisations in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Partners must make a significant cash and/or in-kind contribution to the project. ARC funding is awarded on a basis of a competitive process and rigorous assessment to support the highest-quality researchers and research projects across disciplines. Each year there are three rounds of Linkage Projects funding awarded.
