Esteemed Tasmanian researcher joins the ARC

Esteemed Tasmanian researcher Professor Brian Yates will play a leading role in promoting and advising on Australia's support for science and mathematics as an Executive Director of the Australian Research Council.

Appointing Professor Yates as Executive Director, ARC CEO Professor Aidan Byrne said the ARC Executive Directors are outstanding leaders and well-respected throughout the research community and Government.

"I am pleased Professor Yates will join my team of talented and dedicated Executive Directors and staff. I know his expert knowledge of the Australian research landscape and his experience in leading research and research management positions will serve the Australian research sector well," Professor Byrne said.

Professor Yates comes to the ARC from the University of Tasmania, where he is Professor and Australian Learning and Teaching Council Discipline Scholar in Science. He joined the University in 1989 following the completion of postdoctoral fellowships at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Georgia.

He has held numerous ARC grants and has been a member of the ARC College.

Professor Byrne acknowledged the departure of long-standing executive directors Professor Richard Coleman and Professor Andrew Wells earlier this year. Both have returned to the research sector to undertake key research and leadership roles.

Professor Coleman is Deputy Director of the University of Tasmania's Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies and Professor Wells is Executive Director of the University of Tasmania's Research Division.

"Professor Yates will join my team of executive directors, which currently includes Professor Marian Simms and Dr Fiona Cameron, who have been providing leadership and advice across all areas of the ARC following the departure of Professors Coleman and Wells," Professor Byrne said.

Professor Yates will start as ARC Executive Director in January 2013.

The ARC provides advice to the Australian Government on research matters, manages $879 million of the Australian Government's investment in high-quality research and manages the internationally-recognised Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation exercise.
