Launching Australia’s space future

A new research training centre based in Sydney will develop a world-class Australian space industry in small satellites and train a skilled workforce to grow the sector.

The Morrison Government is providing $4.6 million to support the training centre to skill-up the next generation of workers in cutting edge advanced manufacturing in the commercial space and unmanned aerial vehicle industries.

Liberal Senator for New South Wales Arthur Sinodinos today launched the Australian Research Council (ARC) Training Centre for CubeSats, Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles, and their Applications (CUAVA) at The University of Sydney.

Minister for Education Dan Tehan said the new centre would boost Australia’s space communications and capability.

"Improvements in these areas could mean great advancements in existing satellite systems used for earth and weather observations, high-speed communication and GPS. These devices have major commercial value for the Australian economy," Mr Tehan said.

Senator Sinodinos said the training centre would help to grow Australia’s participation and its burgeoning space industry.

"The training centre will develop a skilled workforce to grow the local space industry and capitalise on global opportunities," Senator Sinodinos said.

The ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centres scheme fosters close partnerships between university-based researchers and other research end-users to provide innovative Higher Degree by Research (HDR) and postdoctoral training. For more information about the scheme, visit the ARC website.
