New ARC Centre of Excellence to explore novel ways to source energy

A new Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence will focus on developing innovative energy solutions that will help make Australia more economically competitive through better energy use.

The Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence in Exciton Science, launched at The University of Melbourne today, is receiving $31.9 million over seven years through the ARC Centres of Excellence scheme.

ARC Chief Executive Officer, Professor Sue Thomas, said the new Centre of Excellence brings together researchers and their collaborators, to discover and use new ways to source energy, and drive innovation for renewable energy production.

“The ARC Centre of Excellence in Exciton Science has brought together university researchers and key collaborators to transform research into practice,” said Professor Thomas.

“Researchers at the Centre of Excellence are exploring better ways to manipulate the way light energy is absorbed, transported and transformed in advanced molecular materials.

“This collaboration and dedicated research focus will enable researchers to explore innovative solutions for renewable energy in areas such as solar energy conversion, energy-efficient lighting and displays, security labelling, and optical sensor platforms for use in defence.”

Researchers based at The University of Melbourne will work closely with Australian Universities— RMIT University; Monash University; The University of Sydney; and The University of New South Wales—and other participating Australian and international organisations: Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation; Defence Science and Technology Organisation; Reserve Bank of Australia; Chongqing Institute of Green and Intelligent Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences; University of Ulm, Germany; Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China; University of California, Berkeley; University of Bayreuth, Germany; and Shandong University, China.

The ARC Centres of Excellence scheme fosters significant collaborations between universities, publicly funded research organisations, other research bodies, governments and businesses in Australia and overseas, all to support outstanding research.
