New Centre pushing the frontiers of bio-nano research

Australian Research Council (ARC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Professor Aidan Byrne, has today officially opened the ARC Centre of Excellence in Convergent Bio-Nano Science and Technology at Monash University in Melbourne.

Professor Byrne opened the Centre on behalf of the Minister for Education, the Hon. Christopher Pyne MP, and said it would be the focus of bio-nano research activity in Australia.

"Nanomedicines are on the cusp of revolutionising diagnosis and therapy in many diseases; the ARC Centre of Excellence in Convergent Bio-Nano Science and Technology comprises a multi-disciplinary team focused on understanding and controlling the interface of materials with biological systems.

"The expected outcomes through research at this Centre are better diagnostic and therapeutic tools that are designed via an enhanced understanding of the bio-nano interface.

"Researchers will design materials that in the future will transport and deliver vaccines, drugs and gene therapy agents, and will  develop new innovations in diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.

"The team assembled at this Centre is of extremely high quality with one of our newest Australian Laureate Fellows, Professor Thomas Davis, directing the Centre in its work," Professor Byrne said.

The Centre will receive $26 million in ARC funding over a seven-year period.

With involvement from 15 collaborating and partner organisations, the Centre brings together a diverse field of expertise, from chemistry and chemical engineering, drug development and pharmaceutical science, to cell biology, cellular and biomedical imaging, diagnostics, systems biology, and social theory.

ARC Centres of Excellence are prestigious foci of expertise through which high-quality researchers maintain and develop Australia's international standing in research areas of national priority.
