Research projects to tackle challenges for Indigenous Australians

Finding ways to help Indigenous businesses develop new sustainable markets for native bushfoods and ornamental plants, uncovering the impacts of covert racism on Indigenous youth, and ways to improve educational outcomes for Indigenous students are amongst the important new research projects announced today.

Australian Research Council (ARC) CEO, Professor Sue Thomas, welcomed Minister for Education Dan Tehan’s announcement of $7.1 million for nine new research projects supported by funding through the ARC Discovery Indigenous scheme to commence in 2021.

Professor Thomas said the ARC Discovery Indigenous scheme provides support for Indigenous researchers and postgraduate research students to undertake research projects that will produce new knowledge for Australia.

“The ARC Discovery Indigenous scheme aims to develop and extend the research expertise of Indigenous Australian researchers and to support and train the next generation of Indigenous researchers,” said Professor Thomas.

Some of the research projects to commence in 2021 by Discovery Indigenous researchers include:

  • Adjunct Professor Dale Chapman from The University of Queensland who will lead a $1.5 million research project working with traditional owners to investigate new technologies and applications for native Australian bush tucker, novel foods and ornamental plants for urban gardens.
  • Dr Bep Uink from Murdoch University who will lead a $584,000 project to provide crucial new knowledge on the forms, impacts, and interpersonal context of covert racism among Indigenous youth, to inform future racism research and interventions in Australia and among other First Nations peoples.
  • Dr Kevin Lowe from The University of New South Wales who will lead a $330,000 research project to investigate how teachers approach Indigenous curriculum content, to improve outcomes for Indigenous students and identify the complex factors that might impede the success of teaching this content.
