SENATOR KIM CARR
Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research

Research for a richer, fairer, greener and healthier future

New treatments for cancer, producing better wine and greater protection of our Great Barrier Reef are some of the benefits that could flow from over 1,000 new research projects being supported by the Gillard Labor Government.

Announcing $310 million in funding for the projects at the Australian Research Council Major Grants Announcement in Parliament House today, Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr said investing in quality research and researchers was the key to solving the nation’s big problems and producing a richer, fairer, greener and healthier tomorrow.

“Australian Research Council funding has launched thousands of Australian and international researchers on the path to world-class discovery. I have no doubt this round of funding will bring about many more discoveries and lead to great developments that will help transform Australian industries,” Senator Carr said.

The research projects will begin in 2012 and be administered over a period of up to five years.

A total of $236 million has been awarded to 778 projects under the Discovery Projects scheme, $42 million for 151 projects under the Linkage Projects scheme, $28 million for 77 projects under the Linkage Equipment, Infrastructure and Facilities scheme and $3.8 million for 10 Indigenous researchers under the Discovery Indigenous scheme.

Senator Carr highlighted the funding—particularly under the Linkage Projects and Linkage Equipment, Infrastructure and Facilities schemes—would help secure strong partnerships between researchers, industry and other organisations outside the higher education sector to find tangible, workable solutions to real issues.

“The Australian research institutions being awarded Linkage funding have partnered with 338 national and international organisations, who will top-up the Government's investment with almost $166 million in cash and in-kind support.”
