Scopus selected as citation provider for ERA 2015

Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Australian Research Council (ARC), Ms Leanne Harvey, has today announced that Elsevier's Scopus has been selected to provide citation information for the 2015 round of Excellence in Research for Australia.

Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) identifies and promotes excellence across the full spectrum of research activity in Australia's higher education institutions.

ERA evaluates the quality of research undertaken in Australian universities against national and international benchmarks and the ratings delivered through ERA are determined and moderated by committees of distinguished researchers, drawn from across the globe.

Evaluations are informed by a range of indicators including citation metrics and peer review, with particular focus on those that relate most closely to the quality of research outputs.

Ms Harvey said ERA uses citation information in relevant disciplines, such as the natural sciences, to inform the expert panels which determine the ERA outcomes.

"The ARC is pleased to have Elsevier's Scopus on board for ERA 2015."

Ms Harvey noted that while citation analysis plays an important role in ERA, a broad range of indicators are used for assessment, including peer review.

"Peer review is also an important component of ERA particularly in the humanities and social sciences."

"ERA is a comprehensive collection—the data submitted by universities covers all eligible researchers and their research outputs. The precise set of indicators used has been developed in close consultation with the research community."

This is the third round of ERA with previous rounds in 2010 and 2012.
