Strong representation for ERA 2018  Research Evaluation Committees

Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Research Council (ARC) Professor Sue Thomas, has today announced the appointment of 140 distinguished researchers as members of the 2018 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) Research Evaluation Committees (REC).

The Committee members will assess the quality of research in Australia occurring in Australian research institutions as part of the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluations now underway for 2018.

“I am delighted these distinguished researchers from Australia and overseas will perform this important role for the ERA 2018 evaluations,” said Professor Thomas.

“They represent experts in their fields and in research evaluation, across a broad range of disciplines—selected from a pool of more than 500 national and international researchers nominated by the research sector.

“Collectively, these committee members represent a wonderful depth and breadth of expertise and backgrounds, including a great deal of experience from previous ERA rounds.

“The ARC is committed to improving the gender balance of members across all ARC committees and I am pleased that, with female members making up 38 percent of ERA 2018 REC members, we have a significantly higher level of representation of women than we had in the previous ERA round.

“Notwithstanding this, there is clearly much more to be done in this area across the Australian research sector, but we are heading in the right direction. I am grateful to the universities across the sector for putting forward many excellent female candidates and I hope to see the trend continue.”

The researchers have been appointed across eight RECs:

ERA is a comprehensive evaluation, administered by the ARC, that examines the entire output of Australian universities’ research efforts. The robustness of ERA is due to the expert interpretation of a range of indicators to report on Australia’s research quality.

The ERA 2018 evaluation round opened for submissions on 19 March 2018 and is currently underway.
