Supporting early career researchers

Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Research Council (ARC), Professor Sue Thomas, has welcomed the announcement today by Minister for Education Dan Tehan of $84 million for 200 new research projects to be funded under the ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) scheme.

Professor Thomas said researchers in their early careers benefit from the dedicated funding provided by the DECRA scheme which enables research and training in high quality and supportive environments.

“The DECRA scheme supports early-career researchers by providing the time and resources to focus on advancing their research, and the opportunities to build important connections and knowledge,” said Professor Thomas.

“These are world-leading research projects addressing important issues that will make a real difference to every Australian.”

Each DECRA recipient will receive salary support for three years and up to $50,000 in additional funding per year for other costs essential to their project.

Some of the research projects that will commence in 2021 by the DECRA awardees include:

  • Dr Sarah Clement from The University of Western Australia will lead a project to support a robust, integrated and resilient approach to fire management, which focuses on the role of governance and will include practical options to reform world-wide governance and policy around fire management practices.
  • Dr Ayushi Bajaj from Monash University will lead a project to analyse the impact of global trade and financial uncertainty on the Australian economy, offering new policy ideas and significant insights for institutions such as the Reserve Bank of Australia.
  • Dr Jonathan Redshaw from The University of Queensland will lead a project to chart the processes underlying children's use of external thinking tools such as calculators, GPS and smartphones, to uncover the associated benefits and harms of their use.
