Researchers at the University of Tasmania (UTAS) have revealed ancient conditions that almost ended life on Earth, using a new technique they developed to hunt for mineral deposits.

According to UTAS geologist Professor Ross Large and his international team, the key was a lack of oxygen and nutrient elements, which placed evolution in a precarious position.
