A team of researchers at The University of Melbourne will work closely with the Melbourne Water Corporation, the statutory authority that controls much of Melbourne’s water system, in an ARC Linkage Project to develop an integrated monitoring and surveillance program that will enhance water safety.

Led by Professor Robin Gasser, researchers will use newly developed technologies to monitor the presence of pathogens, including cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis, in water catchment areas. More than four million people will benefit from these enhanced protections aimed at preventing waterborne diseases.

The project, which aligns closely with the National Science and Research Priorities, will be supported by $890,000 from the Australian Government through the ARC Linkage Projects scheme, as well as additional cash and in-kind support from Melbourne Water Corporation.
