Research Fellow Laura Boykin has been named as the only Australia-based TED Fellow for 2015. Collaborating with the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plan Energy Biology and The University of Western Australian Dr Boykin is applying her skills in computational biology and genomics to address food security issues in Sub-Sahara Africa. Specifically, studying the genetics of whitefly species to understand their differences and to help control them. Whitefly is a pest, devastating agriculture wherever they go by eating crops and spreading viruses, costing the global agricultural economy billions of dollars a year. Dr Boykin said by empowering African scientists with high performance computing skills they will then have the capacity to tackle the issue now and into the future.
