ARC-supported researchers from The University of Western Australia (UWA) have found that an enzyme in plants, ATP Synthase, plays a critical role in how plants respond to the cold.
Dr Nicolas Taylor, an ARC Future Fellowship recipient from UWA’s School of Molecular Sciences and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology (PEB) said that as the climate changes, it is becoming increasingly important to understand how plants respond to temperature.
The researchers say the new finding could be used to produce frost-resistant crops, reducing the impact of significant weather events, which cost the agricultural industry millions of dollars every year.
