Research supported by the ARC and led by The University of Western Australia, in conjunction with the University of Montreal (USA) has revealed some amazing plant kingdom secrets in the kwongan eco-region of Western Australia’s south-west.
The kwongan eco-region is a type of bushland that is exceptionally rich in terms of biodiversity, despite existing on some of the most infertile soils in the world. Researchers have found that the plants which live in the nutrient poor environments of the kwongan bushlands have adapted an amazing variety of root strategies in order to obtain nutrients from the soil.
The researchers are now looking to have the kwongan recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The project findings have also been published in Nature Journal.
