On 7 December 2015 the Australian Government announced its National Innovation and Science Agenda (NISA). The new measures within NISA have been developed to assist in boosting the commercial returns of publicly-funded research.

The ARC will have an important role in delivering on some of these new measures, including the development and introduction of an impact and engagement assessment of Australian university research; and implementation of a continuous Linkage Projects scheme.

Research Engagement and Impact Assessment

The ARC has worked closely with the higher education and research sector, industry and other end-users of research to develop a framework for a national assessment of university research engagement and impact.

In 2017, the ARC conducted a pilot of the Engagement and Impact Assessment methodology, including testing of quantitative and qualitative measures of engagement and impact. This informed the development of the first national assessment which is taking place in 2018 (EI2018). It is running alongside Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA). ERA measures the quality of research undertaken in Australian universities.

The ARC released the EI 2018 Framework and Submission Guidelines and supporting documentation in December 2017. Further details are available on the Engagement and Impact Assessment information page.

Continuous Linkage Projects scheme

The Linkage Projects scheme opened for continuous submission and assessment of proposals on 1 July 2016. To facilitate successful collaboration between industry and higher education institutions, proposals can now be submitted at any time, allowing a shorter timeframe between proposal submission and outcome announcement.

Further details are available on the  Linkage Projects scheme information page.
