Consultations

In preparation for the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2018 submission process, the Australian Research Council (ARC) will be undertaking two important consultation rounds.

University consultation on ERA 2018 Journal List

The ARC will be reviewing the Draft ERA 2018 Journal List in consultation with Australian Higher Education Providers and peak bodies and disciplinary groups.

The ERA 2018 Journal List is designed for the sole purpose of supporting ERA 2018. The ERA 2018 Journal List will define the journals that are eligible for institutions’ ERA 2018 submissions—that is, scholarly, peer reviewed journals that publish original research and were active during the ERA 2018 reference period for research outputs (1 January 2011–31 December 2016).

The ARC will review all feedback received during the university consultation period (mid-February to mid-March 2017) and where a journal is found to meet the following criteria, the journal will be added to the draft list for consultation by discipline experts:

  • Was active during the ERA 2018 reference period for research outputs (1 January 2011–31 December 2016)
  • Is scholarly
  • Has peer review policies acceptable to the discipline
  • Has an ISSN
  • Has evidence of an article in the reference period

The journal consultation process occurs in three phases, the first being a university consultation and consolidation of the suggested changes. In the second phase, peak bodies and disciplinary groups will review this consolidated list. The peak bodies and disciplinary groups will make recommendations to the ARC regarding the final determination of the ERA 2018 journals. In the third phase, the ARC will review comments and finalise the ERA 2018 journal list.

The journal list forms an integral part of the ERA evaluation process. The list provides components that will be used in the ERA 2018 methodology, including: defining the eligible Fields of Research (FoR) codes that research outputs may be assigned during the submission phase; and defining the publication outlets from which the citation benchmarks are derived.

Future Consultations

Further consultations are expected in preparation for ERA 2018 to ensure that issues raised by universities and other stakeholders in relation to ERA are considered and addressed appropriately. Further information regarding these consultations will be provided on the website when it becomes available.
