ARC Open Access Policy – 2026 update

The ARC has updated its Open Access Policy.

This update strengthens open access requirements to ensure research funded by the ARC is accessible to the public. It reflects national and international best practice while recognising diverse research disciplines, publishing practices and cultural considerations.

Open access plays a critical role in maximising the impact of research. By making ARC‑funded research accessible to policymakers, industry, not‑for‑profits and the public, open access supports economic and societal outcomes beyond academia.

Version 2026.1 of the policy takes effect on 1 July 2026 and applies to all ARC grant schemes that open for application on or after this date.

Key policy updates include:

  • Requirements for research outputs have been differentiated to recognise diverse publishing practices:
    • Journal articles and conference papers must be made openly accessible immediately upon publication
    • Monographs, edited volumes, book chapters and research reports must be made openly accessible as soon as possible and within 12 months of publication
    • Creative works are strongly encouraged to be made openly accessible where possible
  • A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is required for all outputs, including creative works, to support discoverability through high-quality metadata
  • The ARC’s Research Organisation Registry (ROR) must be cited when acknowledging ARC funding in research outputs
  • New requirements apply to research conducted with, by or for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities. These align with ARC grant requirements, the NHRMC and MRFF Open Science Policy, and the AIATSIS Code of Ethics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research.
