Protecting Australia’s ecosystems: New ARC Training Centre launches

The Training Centre’s research team will work to address the immediate threats that exotic pests and diseases pose to Australia’s flora. Notably, they will tackle major risks posed to agriculture, ensuring the availability of food and safeguarding Australia’s export capabilities.
By fostering a supportive training environment for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates and postdoctoral researchers, this Training Centre will build a strong pipeline of future leaders in innovative technological and societal approaches for protection of Australia’s natural and productive ecosystems, worth $5.7 trillion.
Professor Ute Roessner said the Training Centre will grow and deepen Australia’s research capability.
‘This is an important and timely initiative that will address increasing biosecurity risks, and is set to transform Australia’s biosecurity sector, which is vital for safeguarding our environment, economy, and way of life.’
‘I’m delighted to say that the Training Centre is expected to attract 21 students, 60 researchers, and 4 research fellows. This is an excellent research program that will nurture and inspire the next generation of top researchers in this field.’
The ARC is proud to support research that will develop novel technologies, create data-driven decision-making platforms, and overcome barriers to biosecurity adaptation, ensuring a robust biosecurity workforce for the benefit of Australia.
