Have your say: AI in research grant assessment

The ARC is updating its AI policy for grants to reflect continued developments and invites feedback from the research community.

The ARC is refreshing its Policy on Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in the ARC’s grants programs to take account of developments in the AI space and welcomes input from the sector.

Published on 7 July 2023, the current policy was one of the first of its kind from a research agency to formally address the use of AI by assessors and applicants of research grants.

Since that time, we have seen rapid developments in the use of AI by the research sector, and more broadly in society, which have prompted a range of policy responses from other research funding agencies around the world.

The ARC is active in the international policy discussions that are occurring around the use of AI, including activities at the Global Research Council. As part of this we have participated in the Research on Research Institute’s GRAIL project (GRAIL stands for Getting Responsible About AI and Machine Learning in Research Funding and Evaluation). A significant recent outcome of this project has been the publication of Funding by Algorithm: A handbook for responsible uses of AI and machine learning by research funders, which was developed to support research funders in navigating the fast-changing landscape of artificial intelligence and machine learning. It is a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in the rapidly developing discussion in this space.

The pace of AI development and the ongoing implications of our own policy approaches have prompted us to ask the sector’s views on the use of AI in grant assessment.  To this end we are in the process of undertaking a short series of targeted consultations, to inform the development of an updated AI Policy later in the year. This includes a short survey which all our stakeholders and interested parties are invited to take – it can be found at this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/X7PY5GL , with responses closing on 10 October 2025.

The intended outcome of this work will be a well-informed, updated AI policy that is suited to the present state of AI technology and that is in step with other agencies and broader government policy.

If you have any questions or contributions that can’t be accommodated in the survey link above, please contact us at policyandstrategy@arc.gov.au
