Professor Alex Broom

Academic Director, Social, Behavioural and Economic Sciences

Professor Alex Broom joined the ARC as Academic Director, Social, Behavioural and Economic Sciences in 2026. He is also Professor of Sociology, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Founding Director, Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies, at The University of Sydney.

An internationally recognised leader in sociology, Professor Broom’s career has been defined by building innovative research ecosystems that address complex national and global challenges, with a focus on transforming how we think about, engage with, and foster health. He is committed to inclusive, interdisciplinary research communities and to scholarship which translates into meaningful outcomes for policy, industry and society.

Working with community, government and industry partners, Professor Broom has been an investigator on more than AU$30 million in competitive research grants, including an ARC Future Fellowship. His research has been widely cited (14,000+ citations; h-index 65) and he has been ranked among the top 2% of cited researchers worldwide. He has published more than 300 academic works, including 17 books, with his latest book, A World of Resistance (with Assa Doron), published in early 2026 by Harvard University Press.

Professor Broom has extensive experience in research leadership and governance. He is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and has held visiting and honorary positions at the University of California, Berkeley, King’s College London, the University of Vienna, the University of British Columbia and Paris Dauphine University. He is strongly committed to supporting the next generation of researchers and to fostering that world-class social, behavioural and economic science research that makes a difference.
